Wonderland Series | The Cheshire Cat

“Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, “What road do I take?”
The cat asked, “Where do you want to go?”
  “I don’t know,” Alice answered.
“Then,” said the cat, “it really doesn’t matter, does it?”

I could never quite gauge the Cheshire Cat. Was he a villain, a hero, or something entirely different? Of course its quite clear on where his loyalties lie in the Tim Burton version. In the book, however, the Cheshire Cat is a little more curious. Unique among Wonderland creatures and threatened by no one, it maintains a cool, grinning outsider status.

The Cheshire Cat turns out to be one of the more helpful inhabitants of Wonderland, so long as one asks it the right questions. I think this creates a very mystical persona. One which I really wanted to recreate in this character’s shoot. I didn’t want to be as obvious for the Cheshire Cat’s outfit, although, I had to add in some cat ears. More so as these type of headbands have been very on trend for sometime. I actually never really took to them, that was, until I purchased this beautiful pair and now I’m slightly obsessed.

In the modern fashion world, I’d imagine the Cheshire Cat to be the dark horse. They’d exude mystery and you’d never really understand them or know there motives. A constant question mark; one could spend their whole lifetime trying to figure the cat out and they’d never have it
quite right.

I really wanted to add in a more evening based outfit for this series and stray away from the everyday outfits I have been creating throughout this series. The Cheshire Cat seemed like the perfect character to carry this out. I really wanted to put emphasis on the mysteriousness and dark beauty of this particular character. I feel this amazing outfit from Fame and Partners, not only achieves the mood I was looking for, but also gives a lovely sense of grace which a stereotypical cat possesses.

Hair & Makeup

For the makeup, I chose to create a silver and blue eye shadow look to mirror the Tim Burton’s Cheshire cat’s fur. Of course I had to add in a long cat eye accompanied with plenty of mascara. As the emphasis was on the eyes, I chose to scrap the blush and simply contour and highlight. I also applied a beautiful pink mauve lipstick. I waited to do this shoot after I got my fringe as I thought a short hairstyle with bangs was the perfect cat-like look. It was kind of a risk as I hadn’t had bangs or hair this short since I was 8 years old. I really didn’t know how they’d look on me. However, after the initial shock of how different the look is, I really like the hairstyle. Overall, I think the bangs and shorter hair compliments the cat ears incredibly well.

I really wanted to shoot this character in a little woodland area. The first time we really meet the Cheshire Cat is in a forest and it only felt right for you to meet this Cheshire Cat in a similar place. Just make sure to ask the right questions, or it’ll be no help for anyone.
