Cleopatra Makeup Tutorial: Wearable + Modern (CF)

'I will not be triumphed over.' ~ Cleopatra
Cleopatra as a whole was quite a remarkable woman. I admire how she embraced the feminine and masculine, refusing to be subsumed by one or the other. It wasn't her features or the way she kohl-lined her eyes but the power of her thoughts, which was truly her sass. Her empowerment and strength is to be admired and although this isn't something you can just obtain through some killer eyeliner. I must admit that wearing a look inspired by her, had me feeling liberated and empowered.

I've always been an eyeliner/ mascara girl. Eye makeup, for me, tops all others which I assume is because I'm a big believer that eyes are the windows to the soul. Eye makeup can make or break the look and I think it allows for the most creativity too. Cleopatra's heavy eyeliner and Egyptian wing takes things to the next level. It makes an incredible statement which makes you look and feel like an Egyptian queen. My roots originate from Egypt, apparently, so it's rather cool to tap into that ancient blood from my ancestors.

I decided to create a modern, wearable Cleopatra look that is flattering and powerful. The eyes, of course, are the main focus for this makeup look. Therefore, the rest of the face is simple with a smooth complexion and some added structure to create strong facial features. I've been obsessed with this look after getting the idea when my hair was being cut. It's turned into my current, daily look and I doubt I'll be getting sick of channeling that Cleopatra-esque look any time soon.

1. Start by applying the 'Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation (#2) ' (Review here) with a large buffer brush. This foundation is a semi-matte and will create a smooth look, perfect for that solid complexion we are going for.

2. Run the 'Charlotte Tilbury the retoucher (2 fair)' under the eyes and over any blemishes. Then, blend into the skin with your index finger. You could also skip to applying the eye makeup and then apply the retoucher and the rest of the face makeup afterwards as the eyes are quite product-heavy.

3. Set the foundation and retoucher with the 'Charlotte Tilbury  Micro-Powder (1 Fair)'. This will keep your complexion looking fresh and flawless all day, ensuring your goddess beauty stays intact.

4. Contour the cheekbones with the 'Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow' and a large, angled, bronzer brush. Make sure to really blend this into the skin and then apply more bronzer into the hollows of the cheeks with a smaller, angled brush. For best results, apply the bronzer lightly and build up the product. This will create a smooth, sharp look to your cheekbones. Also apply this to the outer bridge of the nose and along the jawline for strong definition.

5. With a clean, small angled brush, very lightly apply a small amount of the highlighter from the 'Bronze and Glow' on to the cheekbone. This wants to be quite subtle and only noticed when the light touches your face. It will result in a goddess glow.

6. Fill in the brows with the 'Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Brows in Cara.' This can be quite heavy as we are creating sharp, strong features.

7. Colour in the lid with the 'Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon eyeshadow pencil in Amber Haze' . This is a sheer gold with a subtle effect which works as a great base for the rest of the eye makeup. You may wish to apply eye primer before hand if you have oily lids.

8. With a small eye shadow brush, apply 'Halfbaked' from the 'Urban Decay Naked Palette' into the inner corner of the eye and under the waterline. You can blend this with your finger if required.

9. Now is the moment we've all been anticipating! With the 'Kat Von D Tattoo Liner' run the pen along the lid as close to the lash line as possible starting from the inner corner. When you get three quarters of the way, start creating the Egyptian cat eye. Following your lower lash line, extend the line angling the liner up. Once you have reached the desired length, bring this back down to the upper lash line to create a triangle. Fill this in and connect to the line you created on the upper lid. Run the liner along the water line, once more staying as close to the lash line as possible. Lastly, follow the lash line in the inner corner of your eye extending this slightly to create a point in the inner corner of your eyes. This eyeliner is honestly the best one I've ever had as it applies smoothly, with a flawless finish. It is also waterproof which is highly recommended for this look.

10. Line both your lower and upper waterline with the Charlotte Tilbury Rock 'N' Kohl Bedroom Black liquid eyeliner pencil (Full review here)

11. Generously coat your lashes with the 'Charlotte Tilbury legendary lashes in Black Vinyl'. This is a voluminous mascara which also separates the lashes and works incredibly well with the heavy black eyeliner.

12. Finish the look by applying the 'Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pink Venus.'
This want's to be subtle and natural, as to not overbear the eye makeup and contoured cheekbones. Therefore, only lightly run the pencil along both your upper and lower lip before blending in with your finger.

Now you're ready to conquer the world with your new Egyptian Goddess look.

What do you think of the Egyptian cat eye / Cleopatra look?

This is such a pretty look! I like the fact that you made it totally wearable, but it still looks fierce and we totally get the Cleopatra vibe. She was one of a kind, truly - a very intelligent, powerful woman. Some "inspired by" looks can totally make us feel empowered and confidence, and this is one of them. The photography is beautiful, well done :)
