Pumpkins are suddenly making an appearance, each leaf from the trees are colouring the ground with burning hues of amber and gold. A layer of fog casts over the streets, cold air nipping at you as a greeting each morning and there’s the faint scent of burning wood lingering in the air. It can only mean one thing… It must be Autumn!
Whilst spring will always be my favourite season and winter shall forever hold an icy grip over my heart, Autumn arrives each year with a basket full of fresh beginnings and the promise of mystical stories waiting to be written. It’s a beautiful time of the year but also one that can creep up on you, if you’re too busy binge watching Gossip Girl all summer. (A subtle confession from yours truly.) It can come with a sudden realisation that you are unprepared for the cold mornings and chilly nights. Let’s face it, it can be quite a challenge to throw on several layers, in attempts to fight off the cold and still look cute. For this reason, I created a list of Autumn wardrobe essentials so I would be prepared every year. Here are my top five…
The Shirt Dress
The holy grail of any struggling student, the shirt dress is the forgotten piece of clothing, crumpled in the back of almost everyone’s wardrobe. It is arguably the most underrated fashion trend to exist in the post-modern world.
Of course you can do as I have here and buy an actual shirt dress, or simply visit the mens clothing section and purchase an oversized shirt. If you want to be cost effective and more sustainable, just steal your boyfriends instead. If he notices and looks displeased, simply give him the totally justified response that it’s all in the name of fashion. I’m sure he will understand. You could even choose one for his next Christmas present- see what I’m getting at here?
The shirt dress is a great Autumn essential for its pure versatility and easy-wearing factors. For instance- throw a belt around your waist to show off your luscious curves or buy a corset styled shirt dress, as I have here. Choose a thicker material for extra warmth or undo a few buttons if your co-workers have decided to turn the heater up to full blast at the office.
The shirt dress is an initially masculine piece that can be flipped to ‘adorable feminine’ with a few carefully selected accessories.
The Checkered Jacket
Without a doubt, the most important and essential piece for any ladies Autumnal wardrobe should be a thick jacket to keep you warm. Contrary to what many may think, it is entirely possible to find a warm jacket and still look stylish.
I was fortunate enough to grab this beautiful coat in the post-winter sale earlier this year and instantly knew this garment will see me through many Octobers to come. The fabric is cruelty free- which is vital for any vegan, especially as many Autumn/Winter coats are made with wool and thus a product of animal cruelty. The jacket is very durable and the combination of the thick synthetic fibres and jacket length ensures I will be protected from Autumns’ harsh, chilly breath. Furthermore, nothing quite says pumpkins and incandescent leaves quite like a tartan or checkered print.
Admittedly, its Cher and her impeccable style from 1995 movie, ‘Clueless’, that inspired me to live in berets come each Autumn. It’s not quite cold enough that your ears are turning bright red but the temperature has dropped and thus a hat is a sensible choice. This is why the beret is so perfect. Moreover, it will always look chic and instantly spices up any outfit.
When you’re rushing to work in the morning with countless layers of clothing in a questionable combination, the beret will be your saviour.
A Long pair of socks
I challenge you to find something sweeter than the thigh-high socks trend. No matter how bad an outfit, a pair of over the knee stockings will instantly adopt the current look to charmingly chic. They work particularly well for that difficult fashion transition from Summer to Autumn; take any look catered for hot weather and add a pair of thigh high socks to transform the look to Autumn appropriate, and still look cute in the transition.
Thigh High Boots
A cliche choice; is one even a fashion blogger if they aren’t spotted in a pair of thigh high boots? Despite this platitudinous trend, there’s a reason why it’s so popular and that’s because they can look phenomenal. However, they can come with their own set of challenges and bring a risk of your whole look decreasing in class. I avoid this issue by often pairing these boots with tights or thigh high socks, especially a detailed set as I love nothing more than seeing some little frills peeking out the top of the boots. Moreover, the extra layer creates added warmth.
The transition from Summer to Autumn can be a dramatic change with many struggling to take themselves out of the hot weather mindset. Nevertheless, curating a small list of Autumn essentials and adding a few solid, seasonal staples can provide a concrete foundation for an appropriate wardrobe that is completely personal to you.
